This is a new community of three low energy houses and a communal orchard which is currently in planning. Due to the topography, adjoining properties and large number of existing trees, the houses vary considerably. The upper house makes the most of a larger south west facing courtyard, with the lower house having a smaller south east facing courtyards. This adds variety and distinguishes between properties, and yet through form and materials we have intended to create a homogeneous proposal. Both properties have lower ground floor ‘basement’ garden rooms to take full advantage of the incredibly long sites and the steep sloping topography. A glazed connection and a courtyard, that links the main house and garden room, ensures that good levels of daylight and aspect are achieved throughout the house. Green roofs on the garden rooms ensure that they sit low and form part of the landscape.
