A mixed residential and commercial scheme that gained planning permission in December 2020. An exposed, multi-faceted site on the end of a protected parade of shops needing a sensitive response to its exposed urban context.
We designed a building to sit behind the historical facade, opening it up at ground level to allow the new retail and coworking spaces to engage with the street. Above, nine new dwellings are arranged around a raised internal south-facing courtyard. The design of the new dwellings continues the rhythm and proportions of the existing parade of shops with contemporary detailing.
The development includes on-site parking beneath the raised communal courtyard. This communal garden provides a private entrance for residents, while the fruit trees and allotments create a sense of nurture within an otherwise hard-edged environment. Each dwelling has a private amenity space in the form of either a balcony or roof garden.
