A mixed residential and commercial scheme submitted to planning in early 2020. An exposed, multi-faceted site on the end of a protected parade of shops needing a sensitive response to its exposed urban context. We designed a building to sit behind the historical facade, opening it up at ground level to engage with the street to the new commercial spaces at ground floor level. Above, 9 new dwellings are arranged around a raised internal south-facing courtyard. The design of the new dwellings continues the rhythm and proportions of the existing parade of shops with contemporary detailing.
The development includes on-site parking in addition to the 3 commercial spaces at ground floor. The shared garden at first floor level provides a private entrance for the residents with raised gardens sewn with fruit trees and allotments, creating a sense of nurture within an otherwise hard edged environment in addition to the private amenity spaces.
